Fungai Benhura

Fungai Benhura is a British Zimbabwean artist that graduated BA Drawing at Camberwell UAL in 2019 and completed his MA at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2024 where he was the recipient of the prestigous Stewarts Prize.

His work centres on the the use of delicate layering through found materials. Each layer is formed through scratched paper, glue and paint, creating a thread between each part of the piece. Through discovering new materials, techniques and processes Fungai creates each painting as a conduit into his own thought process, scratching away from the surface to reveal hidden layers, ideas and contexts.

Fungai's work is inspired by jazz improvisation creating rhythmic compositions rooted in both history and spontaneity. Influences range from Lee Krasner and Mark Bradford to Coltrane and Velasquez, with vivid bursts of colour and texture revealing a constant interplay of structure, freedom, and discovery.
