Subtitle Labs announced the launch of our first permanent space in Bloomsbury, with our inaugural exhibition, Parasocial by George Wilkin.
Wilkin, is a British artist, currently in residency at the Sarahbande Foundation. The exhibition will be the artist’s first solo exhibition of works, exploring the relationship between traditional oil painting and our digital contemporary culture. Dedicated to the study of desire, pursuit and its fundamentally visual language, Wilkin probes the ways in which we move and are moved: whether by object, concept or feeling and structures of desire.
The exhibition explored two streams of deep interest for Wilkin, both fascinated by the painted medium, form and movement. She uses the history of paint to explore expressions of the human condition that can’t help but burst beyond the seams of the work.
For Wilkin, holding a tension between representation and abstraction is essential to maintaining an openness of form, seeking to break open the usually concretized ways in which we relate to imagery. In the work the familiarity of the human figure gives way to a general momentum, a rhythm, that cascades across the five panels. Executed with swift, inaccurate brushwork, the artist forgoes exactitude in favour of force. Forms writhe, pull apart, move together in an ambiguous yet unmistakably human dynamic.
